The Compostable Guide To Sustainable Living
Brewed from years of ideation and research, The Compostable Guide to Sustainable Living (which I will refer to as 'TCGSL' for everyones sake in this post), is part diary, part instruction manual, part experiment.
The goal was to subvert peoples ideas about sustainable living, make them question their perception of ownership and develop an impactful interactive experience that allows people to immediately embody lessons they learn.
This 30 page zine was finalised over a year, inspired by print work of Keri Smith and the current social climate. It's printed on decomposable, post consumer paper with the intentions that, by the end of the zine, the reader would be confident and knowledgable enough to then destroy the book, embodying the lessons taught and fulfilling the books lifecycle.
The intention was to force readers to both question their lifestyle and their habits surrounding ownership & sustainable living.
Research into sustainable graphic design and printing was a key element of this work, the end product, while impactful to consumers and attractive, is not actually what I deem as the success of the project. The real result is how the research behind this project will forever shape my approach to design in the current socio-environmental climate. As designers we play a key role in what we produce and how these artefacts have an influence to their environment and audience throughout their lifecycle. It is completely irresponsible for us not to be conscious of this. As the capstone project to my honours year of my design degree, I feel ready to take on the world after finalising this project!
